The Epilepsy Center opens a new stage in the study and management of the patient in Ecuador, with outstanding professionals, both for children and adults. It has the most advanced technology for accurate diagnosis and epilepsy treatment. The objective is to offer the patient a better quality of life with a complete and personalized approach.

The patient will be evaluated by specialized epileptologists, who will certify the patient´s diagnosis with the best technology available in the country, in order to know the cause, and therefore, the patient´s diagnosis and treatment. The Epilepsy Center has an electroencephalography (EEG) equipment with 16 and 32 digital channels, with spike detector, and video-monitoring, both for outpatient and in hospital patient care. This equipment allows carrying out more accurate and reliable studies.

The results are analyzed and reported by neurological physicians with special training in neurophysiology and epilepsy. In this manner, it not only offers improvements in traditional diagnostic and therapeutic processes, but also allows surgical treatments to patients who require it.
The Epilepsy Center is the only one that has the necessary technology and equipment to perform the surgical procedures to treat epilepsy.

Epilepsy surgery is an alternative treatment for all those patients with refractory epilepsy, this means that despite taking 3 antiepileptic drugs (are 3 drugs) at the maximum tolerated doses the patient continues to present seizures.

The surgical procedure is based on a monitoring protocol prior to the intervention itself; the monitoring consists of:

• Continuous Video-EEG recording.
• Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging with epilepsy protocol.
• Neuropsychological assessment.

Epilepsy surgery is a safe procedure, which has been carried out for many years, in different hospitals around the world with very good results.

The EEG is a study that records brain activity in the computer in the shape of lines through 24 electrodes placed on the head and 2 electrodes in the chest that capture the heart rhythm without the patient feeling the electric shock, heat or pain. In this regard it is necessary to clean the area of the head in which the electrode will be placed using a swab and a cream that does not cause pain. Each of these electrodes in turn is attached to the head with conductive paste which attracts the brain's electrical activity to the equipment.

The study could last approximately 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the type of test. A neurologist (a doctor who specializes in nervous system disorders) will read and interpret the results. Although electroencephalograms vary in complexity and duration, results are usually available within 48 hours. The study is completely painless and does not involve any risk. However, by requirement from the Ministry of Health, all patients must sign an informed consent.

Video EEG is a study in which an electroencephalogram and a video register the patient's behavior during epileptic seizures at the same time. As a result a clinical and electrical sequence of the crises is obtained which allows identifying the region or hemisphere of onset of the electric shock.

This is an essential method to evaluate patients with epilepsy, especially those epilepsies hard to control or epilepsies that do not respond to the indicated medication.

The video monitoring is a long-term study that is performed with the patient admitted at the Metropolitano Hospital, which has the facilities and securities to manage patients accordingly. The study can also be performed at NEUROVIDA facilities, only when the study lasts for 8 hours.

The study is completely painless and does not involve any risk. However, by requirement from the Ministry of Health, all patients must sign an informed consent.

It is done like an interview, either with the hospitalized patient or on an outpatient basis, in order to elaborate a psychological profile of the patient and their environment.

Once the monitoring is completed, a personalized treatment scheme is designed for each patient; this can be either clinical or surgical

The Complete Rehabilitation Center is the group of professional services for patients who require personalized therapy for their recovery and evolution.

The Epilepsy Center has a series of broad rehabilitation programs, aimed at patients with acute or chronic problems, and those who are in the recovery phase after a microsurgical intervention.

Physiotherapists, Occupational and Language Therapists, work together with specialists supported by innovative medical technology to achieve an effective and satisfactory recovery.
